"Last August our pony, Crystal, became very lethargic, barely moving, ouchy feet. I had blood work and x-rays done. The vet diagnosed Cushings. Over a three week period Crystal worsened. She lost 100 lbs. and she was not moving at all. Two vets recommended that we put her down. I stumbled onto Dr. Kellon's IR/Cushings email list and had my eyes opened wide! Crystal exhibited every indication of insulin resistance, in addition to Cushings. From Dr. Kellon's recommendation, Cyrstal was immediately placed on a low soluble starch diet. We increased the Pergolide to 2 mls per day on the local vet's recommendation and she was placed on banamine and bute for inflammation and pain. I added in the APF. Within a week Crystal had begun to perk up, she was tolerating the Pergolide better, eating better...it took 14 days before I could completely get her off the bute/banamine, it was another two weeks before she could walk to her paddock, another two weeks and she was trotting! Today Crystal is as good as new (albeit Cushinoid).
While changing everything certainly made a big difference, I really credit APF with helping her tolerate the stress of the meds and just being sick in general.
A different experience with my 3-Day event horse. I had driven four hours this past weekend to ride with Bruce Davidson. My mare is generally very sturdy, durable and always sound. That Saturday she was off feed and had not pooped for seven hours. I put her into the trailer to get her to poop (it worked) and then gave her 4 mls of APF. By Sunday AM she was back to feed, no sign of colic or any intestinal stress.
